Chłopy
Small village, big history
What is it that makes some places stay in the memory for longer? Maybe it’s the climate, which cannot be imitated, or maybe the people who create their unique atmosphere? Chłopy is just such a place – small, but with a big heart.
Name dating back to the Middle Ages
The history of Chłopy dates back to the 13th century, when there was a Slavic settlement here called Borowo. The name changed several times in the following centuries, with Paurhufen and Burow appearing in documents from the 16th and 17th centuries. The current name is derived from the German Bauerhufen, meaning ‘peasant trawls’, and so it has remained.
A resort from over 180 years ago
Few people know that already in 1840, Chłopy was known as a seaside resort. There was a bathing establishment on the beach, and between the wars the village was a highly regarded summer resort – with a post office, bakery, butcher’s shop and neat guesthouses hidden behind hedges. In 1933, it received almost five times as many tourists as it had permanent residents!
A village with a fishing spirit
Although today Chłopy is primarily a place for holiday relaxation, fishing traditions are still alive here. Already before the war, there was a marina here and the first boats were small and rowing. It was not until the 1960s that larger boats with engines appeared. To this day, you can still see fishermen preparing nets at the marina and buy fresh fish straight from the sea.
Underground wealth
There is more to Chłopy than just the sea and beach – there is a brine water deposit hidden underground, discovered by accident in the 1960s during oil exploration. The mineral content is comparable to that of Kołobrzeg, and the water temperature is almost 20°C.

The most fishing village in Poland
It is the only preserved fishing village in Poland listed in the register of historical monuments. The characteristic urban layout, old half-timbered houses and quadrangular homesteads create a unique atmosphere. The most valuable building? An eclectic guesthouse from the early 20th century, today known as the ‘Castle on the Sand’.
Chłopy - a place that stays in your memory
This is a village where history meets nature. A wide, sandy beach, high dunes and an avenue of Turkish hazel, rarely seen in Poland, provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation. And if you listen carefully, you may hear echoes of old stories – the ones that make Chłopy more than just a seaside town.
